Banks earned EUR 158 million
In the period from January to June 2006, the profit of Latvian commercial banks was EUR 157.3 million, which is by 18 per cent or EUR 24 million more than during the same period of the previous year.

According to the statistical data, Latvia occupies the 4th place among 15 European Union member states in utilizing the directives of the EU. Out of 2,730 directives of the EU Latvia has already applied 2,707, which is 99.16 per cent. Only Slovakia, Lithuania and Denmark are ahead of Latvia.

The EU approves ports readiness for Schengen, however they promise suggestions
The experts of the European Union concluded that Latvia has done a lot to put the sea borders in order during its preparation to join the Schengen Agreement. Latvia has to undergo inspection of inland border next week and air border in September. Latvian Ministry of the Interior believes that if the results of the inspections will be positive, the resolution to join the Schengen Agreement will be passed in October 2007. However, the head of the EU experts, Henrik Varnhjelm, said that actual joining the agreement might happen no sooner than in spring 2008.
