Discrimination and taxes
On April 15 the government approved the regulations on collecting and paying value added tax. They will come into effect on May 1. After May 1 LVL 10 million (EUR 14.94 million) meant for fight against discrimination will be available for the businessmen in frames of the programme EQUAL. The criteria for selecting the projects in this sphere are not yet worked out.

Export grows faster
During two first months of 2004 the amount of Latvian foreign trade grew faster than in the same period of 2003. The amount of export grew by 22.1% and reached LVL 287.8 million (EUR 430.194 million). The amount of import grew by 19.7% and reached LVL 427.7 million (EUR 639.312 million).

Forecast of threats
The president of the Bank of Latvia, Ilmars Rimsevics, said that the most important thing for Latvia is to keep the speed of economic development, to slow down growth of crediting and to decrease budget deficit at least by LVL 30 million (EUR 44.843 million). Despite the fact that the level of inflation in March 2004 reached 4.8%, the Bank of Latvia is not going to change the forecast of year’s inflation (4%). However, Rimsevics noted that it could exceed initially forecasted index.

The fund is close, but we will not reach it
The company Lursoft analyzed the year’s reviews of 45,002 Latvian enterprises and found out that only 9,702 of them (7.1%) are in line with 2 of the main criteria, which are important for receiving money from the EU funds. The most of them are small or micro-enterprises. The experts note that if these companies are checked according to other criteria, the number of those, which can candidate for the EU finances, will reduce. The situation could be changed only if the criteria are changed.
